Digital Initiatives

Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary has contributed to the digital development of the city and its destination in various ways.

Gothenburg’s History

Since 2015, Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary has been involved in developing a 17th-century model to visualise the city’s history. This project is a collaboration between the City Planning Office, Visual Arena, the Cultural Affairs Administration, and Göteborg & Co.

The Digital Island Festival

During the final weekend of the Anniversary celebrations in 2023, visitors could participate in the digital festival Gothenburg Island Festival via the HiberWorld platform. Participants could create avatars, explore the digital festival area, and enjoy livestreamed concerts, short film festivals, competitions, and art and gaming experiences. This initiative enriched the Anniversary program and attracted a wider audience, with players joining from countries like India, the USA, and Nigeria.

The Digital Island Festival will return in 2024 as part of the Gothenburg Culture Festival.

In March 2024, Göteborg & Co participated in the global tech event Nvidia GTC in the USA to present how last year’s Anniversary Festival was planned using Gothenburg’s city digital twin and Nvidia Omniverse.
