Why is Gothenburg the world’s most sustainable destination?

In 2023, Gothenburg was named the leader in the GDS-Index ranking for the world’s most sustainable destination with a score of 94.64. Gothenburg has topped the ranking seven times (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023).

The organization conducting the ranking is called the Global Destination Sustainability Movement. The ranking is known as the Global Destination Sustainability Index, often abbreviated as GDS-Index. As the leader in the ranking, Gothenburg has won the GDS-Index Leadership Award.

The index is a comprehensive measurement of how well cities are working on sustainability. The assessment is based on 71 different criteria covering everything from

  • greenhouse gas emissions,
  • recycling,
  • accessibility,
  • inclusion,
  • safety and security,
  • sustainability-certified hotels and restaurants,
  • to the presence of sustainability strategies in both public and private sectors.
