World Masters Athletics Championships 2024: Uniting the world in Gothenburg
In August 2024, Gothenburg hosted the World Masters Athletics Championships, an event that brought together over 8,000 participants from 111 nations. With Slottsskogsvallen as the main arena, the championships were a celebration of lifelong sportsmanship and international community.

Participants, aged 35 and up, competed in everything from sprints to throwing events. The event also attracted Swedish figures such as Ingemar Stenmark.
103 years old
The oldest participant was 103 years old and competed in four events. The event showed that age is not a barrier to participating in high-level sports and inspired both young and old to get involved in athletics.
2,500 volunteers
Around 2,500 volunteers, many recruited through the Årsrika Gothenburg initiative, contributed a total of 50,000 volunteer hours. Their efforts were crucial to the event’s implementation and created an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for both participants and audience.
92% participant satisfaction
The event had a satisfaction rate of 92% of participants and was one of the largest in terms of participants and largest in terms of number of nations.
