Visitor experiences of Gothenburg as a meeting destination 2024
Each year, delegate satisfaction is measured during major international congresses in Gothenburg. This year’s survey results confirm Gothenburg’s strong position as an international meeting destination, with satisfied delegates and positive feedback. Service and hospitality are particularly highlighted, along with the city’s atmosphere and proximity to nature. However, given the long days typical of conferences, there is room for improvement, such as greater flexibility in opening hours.
Annual surveys are conducted among attendees at some of Gothenburg’s largest congresses to enhance the experience for future meeting delegates and develop Gothenburg as a meeting destination. This year’s surveys were carried out between May and September and included 775 personal interviews. The congresses were held at the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre, with delegates staying an average of four days, most of whom stayed in hotels.
High scores for service and experiences
Ninety-seven per cent of respondents were satisfied with their overall stay in Gothenburg. Among individual aspects, service and hospitality continued to receive high ratings. Compared to previous years, the availability of natural areas and attractions was perceived as slightly better, reinforcing Gothenburg’s image as a city that combines urban life with easy access to nature.
What delegates appreciate most about Gothenburg
For many delegates, attending the congress was the highlight of their visit. The venues, facilities, and staff service were also highly rated. Notable feedback includes comments about the city’s hospitality, with “friendly people” and a “great atmosphere” frequently mentioned. Gothenburg is described as a beautiful, clean, and safe city with lovely parks, pleasant walking areas, excellent restaurants, and enjoyable dining experiences.
Longer opening hours
Despite generally positive reviews, there is potential for improvement. When asked about less favourable aspects of their visit, several delegates noted that restaurants and museums closed earlier than expected, which was seen as a drawback. Long congress days often lead to a desire for extended opening hours.
Perceptions of sustainability and travel
The proportion of participants who felt safe and secure in Gothenburg remains high. A particularly encouraging finding from this year’s surveys is that more delegates perceive Gothenburg as a sustainable destination than the previous year’s measurements. Additionally, the experience of travelling to Gothenburg and the city’s public transport received higher ratings than prior surveys.
Many respondents said they would consider returning to Gothenburg for a similar congress or leisure.
